Description: Usage : It is a biphosphonate that acts primarily on bone. Mechanism Of Action : By inhibiting resorption of both normal and abnorml bone it causes asymptomatic reduction in serum calcium and phosphate concentration. Adverse Effects : Oesophagitis, oesophageal ulcers and oesophageal erosions, abdominal pain and distension, diarrhoea or constipation, musculo skeletal pain, headache,rash. Pregnancy : Caution, Use only if potential benefit justifies the risk to the mother and foetus. Breast Feeding : Contradicated. Elderly : May Be Used. Interactions : Asprin: Risks of upper GI adverse effects increased. Calcium supplements antacids: Interfere with absorption of alendronate. Indications : Post-menopausal osteoporosis, Paget`s disease of bone. Dosage : 10mg daily in morning or 35mg/70mg once weekly with full glass of water, at least 30 minutes before breakfast. Patient should stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes and should not lie down until after breakfast.
